The first cathedral of the new administration was named after St. John the Evangelist. It turned out to be too small to serve as a main cathedral. Due to this fact Metropolitan Varsonofiy of Saransk and Mordovia addressed to the authorities of The Republic of Mordovia for the permission to start the construction of a new Cathedral. In 2001 The Russian Orthodox Church canonized Fyodor Ushakov and he became the patron saint of the Cathedral. The construction finished in the year of 2006.
